What is the basis in dividing the atmosphere into layers

The basis for the division of Earths atmosphere is the

temperature profile of each layer.

Earths atmosphere is divided into 5 layers, each layer have different temperature profile.

Troposphere - temperature profile of troposphere is decreasing as altitude increases until it reach the boundary of stratosphere.

Stratosphere - temperature profile of stratosphere increasing as altitude increases until it reaches the boundary of mesosphere.

Mesosphere - temperature profile of mesosphere is decreasing as altitude increases until it reaches the boundary of thermosphere.

Thermosphere -temperature profile of mesosphere is increasing as altitude increases until it reaches the boundary of exosphere.

Exosphere - temperature increase as you go higher.
